Abstract
Multi protocol label switching (MPLS) allows differentiation among individual flows and managing their distribution among resources. Control plane "intelligence" promises lowered cost, improved operation, effective response to failures, and dynamic bandwidth assignment to actual demand. Whether carrier grade Ethernet (CGE) over a dynamic optical infrastructure can substitute ATM over SDH essentially depends on the features actually integrated.
