Abstract

Active personal neutron dosemeters aim at obtaining the immediate readout of neutron personal dose equivalent or dose equivalent rate. Fulfillment of basic physical requirements like the correct dependence of the response of a dosemeter on energy and angle of the incident neutrons is a difficult task; other requirements like high sensitivity to neutrons because of the desired immediate information and insensitivity to photon radiation add to these difficulties. Among other efforts, the European Commission presently sponsors a research project within which various different approaches are investigated, aiming at the development of active personal dosemeters with improved sensitivity and energy dependence. Basic information on the various concepts is summarised in this paper.
