Abstract

A voltage controlled N coupled waveguide array is studied. N voltages are applied, each one to an individual wave-guide and a diversity of power routing and switching functions are investigated. The approach is based on numerical optimization of the output power distribution for each of the required switching or power splitting functions. The search is performed in the N-dimensional space of the voltage induced index changes. Extinction ratios better than -16 dB are demonstrated for all configurations studied. Two methods for further improving the performance of the device are also discussed. It is shown that the device can accomplish some parallel non-blocking switching functions. The mathematical formalism, based on coupled-mode theory is detailed. >
