Abstract

This paper presents a pedagogical method to enhance teaching and learning in linear algebra in engineering courses. The teaching method Peer Instruction combined to seminar strategy, and supported by the Didactical Engineering methodology, is proposed to contribute in understanding abstract concepts and encouraging research and problem-solving creativity. The method was performed in the linear algebra course in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering program at the Federal University of Ceara, Brazil. Student evaluation was performed continuously throughout the course, including exams connected to the concepts taught, quizzes linked to the end of each unit, reading assignments linked to the Peer Instruction method, and oral presentation with written record related to the seminar method. To investigate students opinion of the proposal methodology and assessment method, the questionnaire Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality was conducted at the final third of the course. The results indicate that the teaching strategy contributed to improve students' understanding of the abstract concepts and to develop collaborative and significant learning.
