Abstract

Summary Active immunization of mice against hemolytic streptococci has been produced with human strains of varying degrees of mouse-virulence. Of five strains of high mouse-virulence studied, four produced immunity and one did not. Of eight strains of rather low mouse-virulence, four produced immunity which was slightly weaker than that produced by the more virulent strains, while with the remaining four strains of low mouse-virulence, no definite immunity could be demonstrated. Of the five strains that failed to immunize, two belonged to the “mucoid” variety which represented the only “mucoid” strains encountered during the course of the present study.
