Abstract

Managing congestion in transmission lines with continuous power flow in deregulated power system is a complex task. For maintaining overall security and reliability of the system it is to be ensured that transmission lines are loaded below their thermal limits. Congestion management includes technical as well as economic issues. Rapid transactions of power through transmission lines lead to change the power flow pattern. This may induce congestion in the transmission lines commonly known as line overloading. In this paper Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and its variants are applied to calculate the optimal active and reactive power rescheduling cost for managing congestion. Proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE 30 bus test system.
