Abstract

Previous work in our laboratory has demonstrated that Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a cell-wall deficient bacterium implicated in exacerbations of asthma, activates mast cells for IL-4 production through direct interaction of the bacterial P1 adhesin with the heavily sialated FcɛRI alpha chain. Our current line of investigation focuses on the mechanism of activation of the human monocytoid cell line THP-1 by M. pneumoniae.
