Abstract

Dental plaque samples and oral bacterial cells consumed complement (C) in human serum. No significant difference was found between the C binding ability of dental plaque samples from patients with periodontal disease and those of samples from healthy individuals. An analysis of C component profiles and immunoelectrophoretic patterns showed that dental plaque activated the C system through the alternative pathway as well as the classical pathway.When pooled and dispersed dental plaque was preincubated with fresh serum, the purified C3 conversion and C3 cleaving were observed. The activity of the pretreated dental plaque disappeared gradually by further incubation with fresh serum at 37°C. These results suggest that dental plaque generates the C3‐cleaving enzyme activity.
