Abstract

We develop a thermodynamic treatment of heterogeneous condensation in multicomponent vapor mixtures in the cases where nucleating centers are either insoluble but completely wettable or are partially soluble. This method allows one to find all the main features of the free energy surface without explicitly knowing the free energy itself. The mathematical relations which serve as criteria for whether heterogeneous condensation is barrierless or it occurs in a fluctuational way or does not occur at all are obtained. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical evaluations for atmospherically relevant systems.
