Abstract
Fe2O3 and Pd are successively deposited on an activated carbon support by atomic layer deposition (ALD), producing a large surface area catalyst containing varied loadings of Pd and Fe2O3. Various structural characterization techniques reveal that the Fe2O3 species forms a uniformly distributed amorphous layer on which Pd nanoparticles are anchored. In the hydrodechlorination of 1,4-dichlorobenzene ALD Pd/Fe2O3/AC catalysts outperform a series of control samples including impregnated Pd-Fe2O3-AC and mixtures of ALD Pd/AC and Fe2O3/AC. The improved catalytic performance is mostly attributed to the anti-poisoning effect of Fe2O3 located in close vicinity to Pd.
