Abstract

The effect of orciprenaline on uterine contractility, maternal cardiovascular system, fetal heart rate, and pH of fetal capillary blood was studied in 13 patients in at term labor. Orciprenaline inhibits uterine contractions in early or advanced labor and also in expulsion. This effect is immediate but of short duration once the infusion is stopped. While maternal blood pressure changes were moderate, tachycardia and sometimes arrhythmia were important side effects. Fetal tachycardia was not constantly observed. No effects were observed in the evolution of the pH of the fetal capillary blood.
