The tension which develops in keratin fibres during treatment with a solution of cuprammonium hydroxide (Schweitzer reagent) was determined and related to the supercontraction observed. A mechanism of the generation of tension is postulated and reference is made to the crystallographic changes brought about by Schweitzer reagent in virgin and modified fibres.
