Abstract

Techniques to reduce the standard deviation of quality control statistics have been examined. The analyses studied were serum sodium, potassium, urea, total protein, albumin, calcium, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin and aspartate aminotransferase. An improvement in the power of quality control statistics resulted from (1) elimination of grossly discrepant results and (2) allowance for subtle changes in accuracy, when calculating the standard deviation, (3) replicate analyses of quality control sera, (4) careful choice of truncation limits for the daily mean. A comparison of the usefulness of the daily mean and the analysis of quality control sera has been made in this laboratory. A model system was developed to extend the conclusions to laboratories having different workloads.
