Abstract
Two inhibitors of protein synthesis, acting at different levels, have been used on the young gametophyte of Gymnogramme calomelanos : Actinomycine D and chloramphenicol. In their presence the apical growth is greatly disturbed which brings about a spontaneous branching of protonema. Chloramphenicol exerts an additional effect of blocking normal bidimensional growth. Hence it is possible to deduce the importance of protein synthesis in the prothallus morphogenesis.
