Abstract

Although significant progress has been made in early detection and prevention efforts for certain cancers, challenges remain in a variety of areas, according to a new report from the American Cancer Society (ACS).1 The good news is that smoking rates continue to decline while screenings are on the increase. The bad news is that smoking rates are still high among certain populations whereas issues such as obesity, indoor tanning, and low use of the human papillomavirus vaccine continue to present challenges. Every 2 years, researchers at ACS analyze data for cancer risk factors and screening from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide the latest information regarding cancer prevention and early detection efforts.
