Abstract

In 1980, the ACS Council voted by the necessary majority to amend two articles of the constitution as follows: Designation of Immediate Past President as an Officer of the Society. (Article VI, Sec. 1, 2(a), and 3(a); effective Nov. 17, 1980) (Ratification by members: 24,532 in favor; 3165 opposed; 56 blank) Allotment of Funds to Divisions. (Article XIV, Sec. 3; effective Nov. 17, 1980) (Ratification by members: 24,250 in favor; 3030 opposed; 473 blank) Ballots accompanied by the precise wording of the foregoing amendments were mailed to the members of the American Chemical Society on Oct. 3, 1980. On Nov. 17, the votes were tallied. As indicated by the ratification vote counts given for each amendment, more than two thirds of those voting favored the amendments, which became effective on Nov. 17 as shown above.
