Abstract

ABOUT three thousand million years ago, a series of events took place which led to the formation of our earth together with the other planets of our solar system. It now seems likely that the events which took place near our own sun were not unique. Recent work on the frequency distribution of double and multiple star systems leads us to believe that within the portion of our universe which is visible to our telescopes there may be a very large number of solar systems, each composed of one or more bodies of matter circling about a mother sun. The problem of the origin of our own solar system is one that has challenged men's minds for many years.
