Abstract

Four basic approaches for the acquisition of narrative text medical record data for computer processing are discussed. The magnetic tape “Selectric” typewriter system, which is utilized at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine for the yearly acquisition of 75,000 reports, is presented in detail. Narrative text data processing operations are described next including: formating, data screening, volume analysis, abstracting and file maintenance. Finally, there is a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the narrative text methods, the results which have been obtained and the costs.
