Abstract

Despite current interest in interlanguage, there is little work on it in circumstances where LSP's are being taught. This paper examines the interlanguage of 25 Francophone Zairean students, second-year undergraduates in economics, as they attempt to write an extended essay in English on an economics theme. In terms of microlinguistic error, a very high tolerance of transfer is noted and discussed, and three types of transfer are described briefly. Two macrolinguistic problems are considered in particular: (a) the use of sentence and clause connectors and (b) problems regarding the status of the assignment. Finally, areas where research is needed are outlined.
