Acquired Digital Fibroma of the Lip

Abstract

To the Editor.— A 10-year-old boy had a digital-like lesion of three months' duration on his upper lip. Report of a Case.— An otherwise normal boy had a pink digital protrusion, 5X5 mm, on the vermilion border of the left side of the upper lip (Figure). The lesion had not been preceded by trauma or complicated by bleeding. The lesion was removed while the patient was under local anesthesia. Microscopic examination disclosed parakeratosis without hyperkeratosis, a flattened epidermis, and a dermis rich in fibroblasts but with sparse elastin. Reexamination of the patient 11/2 months later showed no recurrence of the lesion. Comment.— This was probably a case of dermatofibroma. Its digital shape reminded us of acquired digital fibrokeratoma, but our case may be differentiated by notable dermal cellularity, a flat epidermis, and lack of hyperkeratosis.
