Abstract

Recent applications of acoustical model testing to building design are described. The correlation of guidance so derived with other means of evaluation is stressed. Examples of application are: the determination of achievable ratios of direct to envelopmental and to reverberant sound levels in auditorium design, and correlation with recommended ratios derived from auditorium synthesis; sound isolation design for open office plans and correlation with calculations and full-scale measurements; sound isolation design for combined dining and entertainment spaces, and correlation with objective design criteria. As heretofore, the value of modeling is stressed in situations where acoustical design is much too complex for assurance and responsibility based on theory alone.
