Abstract

The present article reports the detailed findings of our study of the acoustical conditions in incubators and infant oxygen tents. This elaboration of our original brief report (published in Lancet, in Great Britain) is presented in order to further alert the medical and health-related professional community against the potential dangers to physical, cognitive, linguistic, and emotional development that may result from the noise levels in these environments. We strongly urge that these phenomena relating to the environment of the hospitalized infant be investigated more widely and with little delay. Initiative should be taken, not only by clinicians and research workers in the treatment centers, but also by engineers and manufacturers involved in the design and production of hospital equipment.
