Abstract

A Baldwin custom Multi-Waveform organ was recently donated by the Corbett Foundation for a permanent installation in Cincinnati Music Hall's 3700-seat auditorium, for use by the Cincinnati Symphony, the May Festival Chorus, the Summer Opera, and the Ballet. Because this old auditorium has an outstanding reputation, no changes permanently affecting either its acoustics or its appearance were permitted. Two high arrays of electroacoustic pipes, radiating tones upward on each side of the proscenium, are supported on movable platforms at stage level. They are supplemented by additional invisible tone sources high above the stage, which are mounted in the existing proscenium arch wall, and by two large pedal tone cabinets for the infrasonic frequency range which radiate through tuned ducted ports into the auditorium. Thus, the tone is produced within the auditorium, rather than the orchestra shell or the stagehouse, and surrounds the large stage opening, distributing and blending the tones for both performers and the listeners.
