Abstract
A major-market, adult-contemporary radio station renovated a turn-of-the-century carriage house into offices and studios. Constraints imposed by the existing building shell included floor-to-ceiling heights and wood-frame construction. Acoustical performance was given top priority by the owner, to assure the finest broadcast facility possible. Special design techniques were used to provide adequate room-to-room insulation as well as insulation from exterior noise. Conflicting requirements included the second-floor location of studios and a large window in the on-air studio, facing a major city street. Mechanical equipment noise was adequately controlled despite many constraints imposed by space limitations of the existing building.
