Abstract

Low-frequency (LF) instabilities of a beam of transverse waves in a plasma are investigated for the case in which the frequencies of the instabilities are less than the effective collision frequency nu e. It is shown that the energy losses of the beam (whose frequency omega 1>> omega pe) due to excitation of these instabilities can increase and exceed the usual Joule dissipation. The growth rates for the LF instabilities are presented for various cases.
