Abstract

The impact of gas rarefaction on the acoustic field of a pulsating cylinder is studied for all Knudsen numbers. The continuum-limit far field exhibits thermoviscous exponential decay. Stronger attenuation occurs in the ballistic limit because of curvature-related geometric reduction of the affected layer.
