Abstract

This paper presents a study on acoustic emission (AE) in the bending fatigue process of austempered ductile cast iron (ADI) gear teeth. Research was conducted on AE cumulative event count, AE event count rate, AE amplitude, frequency spectra of AE signals and crack length in the bending fatigue process of ADI and FC 250 spur gear teeth. The relationship between the AE parameters and the fatigue crack propagation was examined, and the AE characteristics in the bending fatigue process of the ADI and FC 250 spur gear teeth were determined. Basic data were obtained for the prediction of bending fatigue crack initiation of the ADI and FC 250 gear teeth by means of the AE method. Furthermore, the effect of gear material on the AE characteristics in the bending fatigue process of spur gear teeth was examined by comparing those of ADI and FC 250 spur gear teeth with those of the normalized and case-hardened spur gear teeth.
