Abstract

This paper is concerned with the measurement and subsequent analysis of acoustic emission (AE) signals obtained during the unlubricated sliding wear testing of steel and silicon nitride surfaces. SEM and microscopic examination of the worn surfaces confirm that AE rms signals can detect different wear processes occurring during these tests. Consequently, acoustic emission monitoring offers a novel method for studying the complex wear mechanisms that exist between loaded surfaces in relative motion.
