Abstract

Oral cancer may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the tissue in the mouth, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighboring anatomic structure, such as nasal cavity. Patients with tongue and lip cancer are particularly prone to speech and swallowing difficulties. The impact of labial cancer on speech relies on the area and size of growth. The present study was aimed to explore the acoustic characteristic variations for person with labial cancer as an impact of structural deformity. Three participants diagnosed with labial carcinoma which includes two males and one female were included in the present study. In the first male participant, heterogeneous enhancing soft tissue density focus was seen involving the lateral third of left upper and lower lip and extending and involving the left inferior buccal mucosa. Second male participant was having complaint of ulcerative lesion involving the left lower lip. In the third female participant, heterogeneous enhancing soft tissue density focus involving the right angle of mouth and adjacent right lower buccal mucosa and mild mucosal thickening was observed. All patients were recommended to undergo for radiation therapy. The present study considered voice samples of all the three participants which included /bV/ syllable where V consisted of three coronal vowels. Three repetitions of each syllable were considered as stimulus and recorded. The recorded samples were then analyzed using PRAAT software and obtained parameters such as burst intensity, burst duration, pre-voicing duration and the transition duration. Results showed increased duration parameters especially for a transition from /b/ to vowels. The intensity of burst was found to be reduced in this population.
