Abstract

The acoustic cavitation threshold of water has been measured by several observers and has been determined to be substantially below the theoretical threshold for inception based upon homogeneous nucleation of a cavity within the liquid. Recent progress has been made toward a theory of heterogeneous nucleation and results will be given in this paper which demonstrate that a Harvey-type [1] model can lead to accurate predictions of the cavitation threshold of water for a wide range of variables.
