Abstract

A theory of magnetic linear birefringence of a transverse sound in a rhombohedral antiferromagnets with allowance for basal magnetic anisotropy of various origins and an inhomogeneous distribution of magnetization in the crystal was constructed. The results of experimental studies of magneto-acoustic effects on iron borate and hematite are interpreted on the basis of the theory.
