Abstract

Highlights

  • Child growth is considered an important indicator in public health in order to monitor people’s health and nutrition, as it depends on environmental factors that affect the child’s living conditions in the past and in the present

  • The basic action concerning monitoring of growth and development is the central pillar of child care, which allows to identify children who have a greater risk of morbimortality and promote adequate child growth.[2]

  • The effective growth monitoring requires good quality records and, in that sense, the Child’s Health Card is an essential resource, as it is the document in which all data and health events regarding the child are recorded.[3]. International organizations, such as World Health Organization, and Brazilian organizations, such as the Ministry of Health and the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics, recommend the growth followup as a routine activity in child care.[4]. The assimilation of this close watch is still causing confusion among health professionals and has not been performed correctly and systematically, even though it has been recommended in Brazil for nearly 30 years, after the implementation of the Comprehensive Child Health Care Program (PAISC).[5,6]

Summary

Introduction

Child growth is considered an important indicator in public health in order to monitor people’s health and nutrition, as it depends on environmental factors that affect the child’s living conditions in the past and in the present. Such environmental factors include: feeding, diseases, basic hygiene care, housing conditions and access to basic sanitation and health services.[1]. The assimilation of this close watch is still causing confusion among health professionals and has not been performed correctly and systematically, even though it has been recommended in Brazil for nearly 30 years, after the implementation of the Comprehensive Child Health Care Program (PAISC).[5,6]
