Abstract

Acknowledgments Susanna Elm and Naomi Janowitz The following collection of essays results from a conference entitled “Charisma and Society: The 25th Anniversary of Peter Brown’s Analysis of the Late Antique Holy Man,” which took place at the University of California at Berkeley March 13–16, 1997. We wish to thank all participants for enriching the intellectual exchange through their contributions and comments, especially Shadi Bartsch, Aditya Behl, Caroline W. Bynum, Alice Christ, Patrick Geary, Robert Gregg, Rebecca Lyman, Chris Morray-Jones, Christopher Ocker, David Olster, and Birger Pearson. Many others contributed generously to this conference. The Humanities Research Institute at UC Irvine; the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities at UC Berkeley; the Graduate Theological Union; Robert Brentano, the Jane E. Sather Chair; the Program in Religious Studies at UC Berkeley; the Program in Jewish Studies, UC Davis; the Departments of Classics and History at Berkeley; and the Graduate Group in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology, UC Berkeley, gave the Þnancial aid that is fundamental. The conference emerged out of a long-standing tradition, the biannual meeting of those interested in Late Antiquity on the West Coast, known as Late Antique Religions et Society, vulgo Lares. Lares sparked the idea, and Lares’ members were instrumental in bringing it to life. Special thanks are due to Lisa Zemelman, Victoria Morse, and in particular William North, the spiritus rector without whom this conference would not have been the same. Finally, we would like to thank the editors and staff of the Journal of Early Christian Studies and Johns Hopkins Press, who made this special issues possible. We dedicate this volume to the memory of Anitra C. B. Kolenkow (1934–1996), esteemed colleague and cherished friend, who was to have participated with a paper entitled “Before Simeon and After: Poetry and Power, Process and Anthropology.” Copyright © 1998 The Johns Hopkins University Press
