Abstract

Epistemological self-reflection in applied linguistics has been highlighted as an integral part of the research process through reflexivity (Consoli & Ganassin, 2023). Recognizing the influence of life capital is a self-reflexive practice that provides much-needed context for the choice made by the researcher. However, further researcher self-reflection into researcher ontology is needed. This article discusses one such way with the acknowledgment of immanence. The concept of immanence has existed in postmodern conversations, challenging the notion of inherent hierarchies (Deleuze et al., 1987). One such hierarchy is the dynamic between the researcher and their inquiry, which posits that the researcher can transcend their scholarship and are impervious of influence by what transpired during their scholarship (Pillow, 2003; St. Pierre, 2019). This manuscript introduces immanence and provides a guide on how to acknowledge it throughout the different stages of inquiry.
