Abstract

Summary 1. The pH of different concentrations of casein hydrolysate and synthetic amino acid solutions are 5.40 to 6.19 and the titratable acidity varied from 14.2 mEq/L to 42.1 mEq/L. 2. The potassium phosphate, magnesium sulphate, calcium gluconate, and vitamin additives mostly show acidic pH but none gives rise to significant titratable acidity. 3. The osmolality of the solution is related to the 20% dextrose solutions used and is shown to be hyperosmolar (518 m0sm/kg to 1326 m0sm/kg). 4. The sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and sulphate concentrations are also determined and compared to the manufacturers. The amino acid compositions of 5% Amigen and 8.5% FreAmine are listed and compared to the Similac formula.
