Abstract

The silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve SAPO-11 has been synthesized hydrothermally in our laboratory. Its acidic properties and the diffusivity of toluene and xylene isomers have been measured. The selective alkylation of toluene with methanol has been performed on SAPO-11 and the results compared with SAPO-5 and HZSM-5. The experimental results showed that SAPO-11 has medium acidic properties associated with an enhancement of the para-selectivity above the equilibrium value, whereas only an equilibrium mixture was obtained on both SAPO-5 and HZSM-5 at temperatures below 775 K. The diffusion properties of SAPO-11 are similar to those of HZSM-5. In order to explain these results the isomerization of p-xylene over these samples was carried out.
