Abstract

An acid settling pond located in Barton County, Missouri, was temporarily drained September 15 and September 16, 1980, for reconnaissance investigations. The pH of the acid pond, on September 15, 1980, was pH 2.6; the pH of the pumped pond water in a receiving pond on September 16, 1980, was pH 5.6. It is believed that acid water removed from the source of acid production can, by treatment with calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), be raised to a pH above 6.5. Considerable savings may occur by treatment of acid waters removed from the source of acid production with only calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) versus inplace mixture treatments of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and hydrated lime (Ca(OH 2 )).
