Abstract

In 54 cases of intrahepatic cholestatic jaundice in late pregnancy the acid-base balance parameters in capillary blood were studied (control group — 41 women with the normal course of pregnancy). Significant changes were detected in the form of: pH values, base excess and HCO′ 3 concentrations, decrease and increase of partial oxygen pressure ( Po 2). In cases of intrahepatic cholestatic jaundice coinciding with the urinary tract infection additionally a further increase of Pco 2 occurred. The greatest changes were recorded in cases of recurrent jaundice of pregnancy. The degree of partial pressure of carbon dioxide ( Pco 2) and HCO′ 3 concentration and base excess decrease was correlated with the serum direct bilirubin concentration. The observed changes of acid-base parameters suggest subclinical metabolic acidosis.
