Abstract

In one hundred diabetics the Achilles reflex time was determined by means of a photo-myographic recording. In 28 of them a bilateral areflexia was present. In 72 patients the average value of TRTA appeared prolonged in a significant way if compared to the average value of 118 control subjects (respectively 340 ± 6 and 314 ± 4 msec.); however the values of 58 diabetics were within normal range. Among the diabetics, with and without signs of neuropathy, no significant difference was present. No correlation with the patients' age and the diabetes duration was present. In a great number of patients having an areflexia a muscle contraction was observed after the gastrocnemius muscle had been struck with a hammer. The results enable the AA. to put forward the hypothesis that a diabetic myopathy of a functional or organic nature may exist.
