Abstract

This research was carried out to provide some of the preliminary information for planning a strategy to address the problem of low achievement in reading in the city of Glasgow. It reports on reading scores in a representative sample of schools in the north west of the city. This gives baseline information on levels of achievement and their relation to family income. Lessons for the nature and timing of intervention are drawn.
