Abstract

Power line communications (PLC) enable modern and flexible network applications in smart grids. Due to severe channel fading and impulsive noise, the performance analysis for a PLC channel is a great challenge. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the PLC channel under impulsive noise. Specifically, we obtain the achievable rate of the PLC channel under the assumption that the impulsive occurrence number (ION) follows Poisson distribution. We derive the cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) based on the statistical characteristics of the PLC channel. Furthermore, we derive the ergodic capacity for the PLC channel according to the CDF of the received SNR. Simulation results are provided to verify the analytical results.
