Abstract

Acetylenic polyesters were prepared by the ester-interchange method between dimethyl or diethyl acetylenedicarboxylate with ethylene-, diethylene-, or propylene glycols. Also a polyester was prepared by the action of ethylene oxide on acetylenedicarboxylic acid. Moreover, polyesters of acetylenedicarboxylic acid, maleic or phthalic anhydrides with ethylene glycol were prepared. Relatively high temperatures or long reaction periods led to the formation of insoluble polymers, and this may be due to the conjugated system CCC=O . All of the linear acetylenic polyesters prepared failed to cure with styrene except in the system acetylenedicarboxylic acid, maleic anhydride and ethylene glycol. The structures of the polyesters have been studied by examination of their i.r. and NMR spectra.
