Abstract

The synthesis of acetylcholine and the sensitivity towards sialagogue agents were studied in the submaxillary gland of the cat after crushing the preganglionic parasympathetic fibres and in the parotid gland of the rabbit after crushing the postganglionic parasympathetic fibres. The first signs of reinnervation in the cat's submaxillary gland were found after about two months, as seen by a decrease of supersensitivity and a slight increase in choline acetylase activity. Complete reinnervation varied very much but seemed to occur within a year. Reinnervation of the postganglionically denervated rabbit parotid gland was slower and much less complete.
