Abstract

Methods: A whole-gut perfused rat model of cholera-toxin (CT) induced diarrhoea was used to examine the effects of acylated starches in hypotonic ORS on fluid and electrolyte uptake. Three experiments were undertaken: (1) low and high amylose maize starch (LAMS, HAMS) and butyrylated LAMS and HAMS at 50g/L (LAMSB50, HAMSB50); (2) acetylated and propionylated HAMS (HAMSA50, HAMSP50) at 50 g/L; (3) HAMSA at 50, 25 and 10g/L (HAMSA50, HAMSA25, HAMSA10). Control perfusions (no starchCT; LAMS and HAMS -CT, were included.
