Abstract

In a recent visit to a local hospital, I spent some time with a nurse who was providing discharge instructions for a pediatric patient and the family. As we reviewed the medication orders, I was struck by the amount of acetaminophen that was contained in several products that were prescribed or recommended for the patient. If the patient had been given full doses of all of the medications listed, there would have been a risk of liver toxicity, based on newly published dose limits for acetaminophen. Philip J. Schneider, MS, FASHP, FFIP, is professor and associate dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Arizona in Phoenix.
