Abstract

Purpose: Abnormalities in hip shape are thought to represent an important predisposing factor for the development of hip osteoarthritis (HOA). Whereas developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is linked to early onset HOA, more subtle changes in hip shape are also thought to contribute to HOA. These include cam and pincer type morphology, which are thought to lead to femoro-acetabular impingement (FAI), and acetabular dysplasia. We aimed to (i) evaluate relationships between radiographic hip shape derived from UK Biobank DXA images, and osteoarthritis based on definitions of varying severity and (ii) determine to what extent radiographic hip shape-HOA relationships are modified by alpha angle (AA) and lateral centre edge angle (LCEA), reflecting cam morphology and acetabular dysplasia, respectively.
