Abstract
Many opinions on the age, work hours, specialty, job stability and interest of young physicians in the American College of Emergency Physicians and in emergency medicine are widely held, but there has been no investigation of their validity. A study was made of 550 application forms and approximately 300 chapter information forms from established and new members of ACEP. The results indicate that 23% of members are under 35 years of age and 60% are in full-time practice of emergency medicine. Of new applicants, 7% are in full-time academic medicine. A great majority, 80%, have licensure in two or less states, and 78% limit their practice to a maximum of two hospitals. A growing number of ACEP applicants chose emergency medicine as their primary career; only 29% are board eligible or certified in another specialty versus 45% of current members.
