Abstract
Great scholars with great number of literature have previously discussed the legacy of the Islamic pilgrimage’s role in spreading Islam as the Acehnese identity. However, few references extrapolate the role of Islamic pilgrimage as the mechanism of Acehnese identity formulation. Based on observation of the current site of Rumoh Aceh in Mecca, and extensive reading on Acehnese heritage, I argue that the Islamic pilgrimage (Hajj) played an extremely important role in developing Acehnese civilisation, as it might have worked as the mechanism of creating Acehnese identity among the Southeast Asian neighbours. This article concentrates on the pilgers’ route of Malacca straits‘role before the invention of steam machine and during the heyday of Acehnese civilisation. This works has significant contribution to raise the awareness of the fact that is believed to be the strong reason why the Acehnese civilisation has become the leading power at that time.

“Banyaklah negeri yang di bawah angin dan atas angin kita melihat, di istana segala raja-raja yang besar-besar, tiada seorang jua pun seperti perintah menjelis Duli Hadahrat tuan kita ini. Sesungguhnyalah negeri Aceh Darussalam ini Serambi Mekkah Allah yang Mahamulia.”. Aceh dikenal sebagai Serambi Mekkah karena Aceh adalah tempat istimewa. Aceh laksana Makkah sebagai pusat kegiatan haji dan menuntut ilmu saat itu. Sebelum menunaikan haji ke Makkah, belajar “rukon haji” disini adalahwajib yang mesti disinggahi oleh semua jamaah haji Nusantara.Disini mereka harus berguru dan belajar memperdalam ilmu agama dan rukun haji sebagai pra-syarat memenuhi “mampu” berhaji. Karena tanoh ini sebagai muqaddimah menuju haji ke Makkah, maka oleh karena itu disebutlah sebagai “SerambiMekkah”. Peradaban Aceh (awalnya dimulai di Samudera Pasee) dibangun oleh Syarif Makkah karena perintah Rasulullah langsung. Aceh berkembang menjadi pusat peradaban Islam karena Aceh menjadi pusat menuntul ilmu rukun haji dan agama Islam sehingga menjadi persinggahan wajib bagi setiap jamaah haji Asia Tenggara. Karena aktifitas haji di Aceh ini, maka Aceh akhirnya dinobatkansebagai “Serambi Mekkah”
