Abstract

Accurate analytic formulas for perturbation analysis of metal-clad and weakly absorptive multilayer dielectric waveguides up to near cutoff are derived for the calculation of propagation constants and attenuation coefficients. The dependence of the optical characteristics on core width and on buffer layer thickness are studied. The dependence of the cutoff width on the thickness of buffer layer or metallic layer are described and discussed. Specific examples for metal-clad three and four layer dielectric waveguides are given. The computed results are in excellent agreement with those obtained by an exact solution of the complex eigenvalue equation and are compared with some other approximate methods.
