Abstract

Lifetimes of five excited states of krypton II and three excited states in xenon II have been measured. The instrumental response function has been measured experimentally and each time spectrum is analysed by a least-squares fit to the exponential decay, convoluted with this known instrumental response function. Pressure-dependent effects have been avoided by using low target gas pressures and precautions have been taken to make negligible other known systematic errors in the measurements.
